Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus that often flies under the radar. Since its discovery in 2001, it’s been recognised as a major cause of respiratory infections. Look out for symptoms like:
- Cough
- Fever
- Nasal congestion
- Shortness of breath
Who needs to be extra careful? Children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems are most vulnerable. While most people recover with rest and care, it can sometimes lead to more serious conditions like bronchiolitis or pneumonia.
HMPV is closely related to Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and shares a similar seasonal pattern, with outbreaks commonly occurring in late winter and spring.
Stay Protected! Since there aren’t specific treatments or vaccines yet, prevention is key:
- Regular handwashing
- Covering coughs and sneezes
- Staying home when sick
- Maintaining good ventilation indoors
🧼 Want to stay healthy? Wash your hands properly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. It’s one of our best defenses against respiratory viruses like HMPV
